Shon P has been a hot topic on social media lately, with his debut single #GTFOH blasting across the airwaves on local radio, as well as on SoundCloud, Spotify, and Youtube. This young rapper is doing it right – he made his music available on iTunes and the Google Play Store from the get-go, rather than becoming what critics in the industry would call a “Facebook Star”.
Shon Pennerman grew up in the Bacardi Road area of New Providence. He graduated from C.V. Bethel before going on to COB to study Music.
Unlike many artists who grow up surrounded by music, Shon is the sole musician in his family. However, he proudly points out: “I see where my ventures inspire individuals in my family to not only take the career seriously, but also to become involved. I see my little sister getting deeper into singing and my little brother writing songs”.
As for the development of his own talent, Shon explains, “From as long as I can remember, I have always loved music (especially rap). I remember learning every rap song I liked and later altering each of them to fit my own style. That practice got me into writing songs and learning music in general. The theory, understanding instruments, sight reading, playing by ear, teaching, arranging and writing music, all came after.”
This versatile musician plays piano, bass guitar, all brass instruments and the drums! “Some better than others,” he humbly states. Though he plays close attention to a lot of singers and instrumentalists, his list of top musical influences include: Kirk Franklin, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Method Man, DMX, but mainly Eminem, and Lil Wayne. The hype and fun he saw artists having made it impossible to stay away from rap! “in the late 90s you could see the fun and enjoyment in rap! Sadly, you don’t see that as much anymore. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out: What’s Happenin’ – Method Man and Busta Rhymes”
Locally, I’m inspired by a lot of artist and instrumentalist but to name a few, I’ve been following Lady E, The Spank Band, Tingum Dem, Mdeez, Sammi Starr, All for One, Chase, Wendi and Risa Smith.
When asked about the success of #GTFOH, he stated, “I knew it was a great song, but I honestly didn’t expect so many people to be following and supporting it so quickly. It came off as if it was an overnight success, but I know all the hard work that had to be put in for it to even be possible. The amount of support, love and attention that I’ve been getting is amazing. It’s unbelievable. All thanks to God and this team.”
As for the next steps in his career, Shon P said, “Right now, I’m really just pushing #GTFOH as far as it can go, but the next thing in mind is to release another single that I’m working on. It’s a collaboration piece with an amazing artist. I don’t want to say too much until it’s ready, but it’s going to be epic!”
