When you hear the name Sammi Starr, some recent events probably come to mind: winning a Bahamian Icon Award for his incredible hit “Jump in Da Line”, signing a hot deal with the Sony Record Label, and placing first and second, respectively, in the 2015 and 2016 Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Music Masters Competitions. This year’s entry, Second Time Around was deemed by some to be a little cocky, but overall, I think the play on words was fun and pushed the envelope a little, and in my estimation, was the top song of the competition.
His soca infusions may seem a far cry from the music of a youth spent in Andros, but Sammi remains musically diverse, and still writes, sings and produces gospel music as well as other genres. He’s not just a sweet voice though: Sammi is also the founder of Starrboy Inc. and Kai-Lee Management, companies which combine his love and knowledge of the music industry with his communication and creative thinking skills.
With 3 children under the age of 6, you might wonder how Sammi keeps it all together; but he is fortunate to have a brilliant and supportive wife, Racine, and a strong network of family and friends whom he can call on whenever he needs.
